Miniature Schnauzer – The Ideal Family Pet

The term ‘smart cookie’ was, in all likelihood, coined for the Miniature Schnauzer. In addition to being fairly intelligent, this breed is among the friendliest when it comes to dogs. These small dogs first rose to prominence in Germany back in the late 19th century. They’re a mixed breed of dog, crossed between the Standard Schnauzer and smaller breeds like the Affenpinscher or the Poodle. Since World War II, the Miniature Schnauzer has become a very popular breed, especially in North America. Unlike most terriers, these dogs are not very aggressive and are quite playful. They can serve just as comfortably as household dogs as they would as tracking or hunting dogs. They need to be eased into social circles from an early age, making them an ideal companion for all children and even other dogs. Their furry coats characterize their look and it looks like they have a beard and moustache.

Caring for your Miniature Schnauzer

The best part about this breed is that they love pretty much any kind of living environment. They adapt very quickly. But it is advisable to get them only if you have a house because of their tendency to bark a lot. If you kept one in an apartment, you might risk upsetting your neighbors. The Miniature Schnauzer is the ideal family dog. It loves being the center of affection and has a lot of love to give as well. They’re not very fond of kennels though as it limits their activity considerably.

Miniature Schnauzer puppyIt is important to brush the Miniature Schnauzer quite frequently as this limits the amount of matted and tangled hair. If you do not brush regularly, then you may need to resort to clipping, which is not very convenient. Clipping nevertheless is usually done for them twice a year. If you or anyone in your household has trouble with allergies, then this breed is perfect as they do not shed much and their hair is mainly tangle-resistant.

Most dogs will eat as much as you give them. You therefore need to be careful with how much you feed them and what you feed them or you might end up with a dog that has an eating disorder. As far as exercise goes, these dogs are naturally energetic and extremely active.

They do not require a lot of exercise outdoors, as a result. A walk once a day is beneficial though, especially if you’re keen on bonding with your dog. Apart from that, played in the backyard or a nearby park is also a good option.

Health Issues and Care of Miniature Schnauzers

Miniature Schnauzer While the Miniature Schnauzer on average lives longer than other breeds, it can be prone to a few health issues, in spite of being generally considered as a healthy breed. These include progressive retinal atrophy and urolithiasis, which are among the most common problems. Esophageal achalasia and follicular dermatitis have also been spotted among these dogs. Another disease called von Willebrand disease (VWD) is also found in some of them, although it is primarily an inherited disease.

Training
These dogs are perfect for showmanship and any pet talent events. They can be trained to compete in various events such as flyball, herding and tracking with ease because they are very obedient. Their well-mannered attitude, coupled with obedience training from an early age, make them excellent household dogs as well as outdoor showboats.

The Miniature Schnauzer is the perfect traveling companion. While they love to be pampered and can be spoiled like most other dogs, they won’t take advantage of their owners. They are right for you if you’re looking for the ideal family pet.
